Join us for a 3-hour hands-on dumpling workshop led by Lani Chan, founder of Hei Ma, where you'll learn to make dumplings entirely from scratch — wrappers, fillings, and all. You'll start by making the dough using heirloom grain flours grown by our Sebastopol neighbor Farmer Mai, who will be on hand to share the story behind their remarkable grains. From there, you'll form and cook vegetarian dumplings, learn to make scallion pancakes, and pair everything with Hei Ma chili crisp and a special dipping sauce made with Gold Ridge Organic Farms Apple Cider Balsamic Vinegar.

The experience begins with a ride aboard our Apple Trolley out to the Apple Cottage, where the class will take place surrounded by the beauty of the farm. Each guest will receive an apple-blossom pink apron to take home and enjoy a refreshing citrus shrub alongside their freshly made dumplings. Whether you're a seasoned home cook or a first-time dumpling maker, this is an experience you won't forget: good food, great company, and a deeper connection to the ingredients grown right here in Sonoma County.

Lani Chan is the co-founder of Hei Ma (formerly known as Big Spoon Sauce Co.), a Sonoma County-based small-batch sauce brand rooted in Chinese culinary tradition and peak-season California produce. What began as a chili crisp project in a Brooklyn apartment in 2019 has grown into a community-driven food brand celebrated for its bold flavors and cultural heart.

Mai Nguyen is an award-winning heirloom grain farmer, miller, seed keeper, and community organizer based right here in Sebastopol. In 2024, their work was recognized with the prestigious James Beard Leadership Award for their contributions to sustainability, equity, and justice in food systems, collaborating with communities and coalitions to shape food policy that uplifts marginalized farmers and promotes land sovereignty.

Apple U-Pick FAQs 
 
Do I need a reservation? 

Yes! Please reserve your time slot on our reservation site. Reservations help us ensure everyone has a wonderful experience without overcrowding.  
 
Can I show up without a reservation?  
We require reservations to maintain our capacity limits and ensure everyone enjoys their visit to the fullest.  
 
Can I cancel my reservation?  
Absolutely! You can cancel your reservation up to 48 hours before your scheduled time by calling us at 707-823-3100. Please note that cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance will result in forfeiture of the entrance fee. 
 
Can I bring my dog?  
Dogs are not permitted in the orchard, with the exception of service animals. This policy helps ensure the safety and comfort of all our visitors. 
 
Can I bring a stroller into the orchard?  
For safety reasons, strollers aren't allowed in the orchard, but you're welcome to leave yours at the check-in area where it will be safe and waiting for you!  
I require mobility accommodations. Can I still pick apples in the orchard?  
Yes. Please call us on 707-823-3110 once you’re made a reservation and we can provide suitable transportation into our orchard.

Why is there an entrance fee?  
The entrance fee helps us maintain our beautiful orchard and keep our experienced staff on hand to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. 

How much are the apples?  
Our delicious U-pick Honeycrisp apples are $4.00 per pound.  
 
What variety of apples will we be harvesting?  
You'll be picking our delicious Honeycrisp apples!  
 
Can I harvest heirloom apples?  
While heirloom apples aren't available for U-pick, we offer many wonderful heirloom varieties for purchase in our Farm Shop.  
 
Are your apples organic?  
Yes, all our apples are organically grown and certified annually by Oregon Tilth!
