Strawberry Parfait Heirloom Apples Announce Harvest Season in Sonoma County

July 31, 2024

Heirloom apple season has begun at Gold Ridge Organic Farms. The Strawberry Parfait variety is the earliest apple that we grow, typically ripening in late July to early August. It is a small, fragrant, tart apple with a brilliant red-and-white skin and a pink-streaked white flesh. We love starting our apple season with these special beauties.

Developed in the 1970s through Rutgers University’s apple-breeding program in central New Jersey, this apple is a cross between Mollies Delicious and July Red. Its small size, chewy skin, and snappy acidity points to the crabapples in its heritage, but you’ll also find Sebastopol's renowned Gravenstein apple in Strawberry Parfait’s family tree.

This apple doesn’t store well, so it’s best when eaten fresh. This variety takes center stage in our new single-variety artisan Apple Cider Vinegar.

Strawberry Parfait holds its pink color when cooked, making it a good choice for applesauce or open-faced tarts or galettes.

Available for sale late July through mid-August in our Farm Shop and through select local retailers in Sonoma County and the San Francisco Bay Area via FEED Cooperative.
